Traffic Sources

I run a weight loss blog and there are some interesting visitor stats to share from that blog since I tried a variety of methods to obtain traffic.

Interestingly, the best source of traffic is a blogspot blog. I am struggling to remember how I achieved this, but I think I either commented on their blog or linked to them in a post and they added me to their blog roll. Ever since I got tons of traffic from that blog.

In second place is Google as you might expect, but they only drive half the traffic that the Blogger blog drives!

Next is MSN traffic followed by yet another blogspot blog! Amazing.

Then there is live search traffic (which is Microsoft-related) and then Google UK followed by Squidoo.

Squidoo is a site that allows you to create one-page article-like site that they monetize and give you a percentage of the takings, also you add your dofollow link.

These used to rank well and have page rank, but I’m not sure if they rank so well any more. When I first signed up with Squidoo, I was amazed to grab a PR4 page about Red Wine, so it got me very enthusiastic to use them. But I am still getting traffic from my Squidoo page.

Next on the list is gmodules. What I did here was to code a Google gadget which includes a link to my site. These are plugins for websites that insert content into the site. In my case it was random weight loss tips. These “gadgets” are basically javascript and you can list them in the Google gadgets repository for all the world’s webmasters to download and embed in their web sites.

So, if you are lucky and you created some really popular gadget, look forward to serious traffic!

Next on the list of traffic sources is YouTube. The trick here is to make a video that many people will like and share around the web. To expose the link to your site you can display it on the intro and end (for 30 seconds say) and add a hypertext link as the first part of the video description such as http://yoursite.com brings you this amazing video … Don’t forget the http part, this is crucial to make a clickable link.

So that’s about it for significant traffic, after this I see some blogs and Yahoo etc.

So I hope this gives you some ideas as to how to get more traffic to your site.

There are of course some sources of traffic I have not tried like article marketing, since I post my own content to my sites, it is kind of hard for me to post original articles to article sites that will outrank my own site for my material. But maybe you had success with this approach?

Thanks! Good luck with the progress of your own blog.

Consider branching out to your own domain and hosting once you are comfortable blogging to your Blogger blog so you can link out to your new site and have full control over the content, stats, Ads and links etc.
